This past Saturday we sent our only senior, Jodi Watkins, out in style. With the gym decorated beyond compare and our team decked out in Pink for our Pink Zone Event, the Pioneers came out and beat Illinois College in a back and forth contest. Shutting down IC's offense with a stellar 3-2 zone, we finally played the type of team defense that I had dreamed of all season. We saw the weakside, we bumped cutters in the lane, and denied the entry pass into the post. We boxed out (sometimes!) and closed-out with our arms up. It was beautiful to watch.
Our intensity and ability to convert offensively was there for forty minutes. With every player that stepped on the floor, I sensed a desire and ability to contribute and provide a spark, whether it was a great offensive rebound, or a solid defensive stop. Everyone contributed and I am extremely proud of each of our athletes.
What a way to end the home season at Darby! Our AD, Coach Wallace, congratulated me after the win by saying that the team had really come full circle this year and that the improvement was a nice ending to the year.
I thanked him, but reminded him that this was only the beginning of what is to come.
One more game vs. Monmouth this Saturday. We played the spoiler once, we will play it again!
GO PIONEERS!
