A new feature we have on the blog this year will be our Captain's Corner. This is a chance for our captains to share thoughts and stories and to reflect upon their time as Grinnell Pioneers. We will have three installments over the summer and frequent write-ups as the season gets underway.
Our first installment is from Jessica Shotts, our lone senior on the team. Jessica is from Colorado and is a sociology major.
I have spent a lot of this summer reflecting over my past three years at Grinnell and preparing myself for my last year of college. It's crazy how fast the time flies by! I can still remember my first day at Grinnell vividly because I bawled my eyes out at Pags. Quite embarrassing, I know, but I didn't want my parents to leave me because I was scared to grow up. And now that I have grown and am a senior in college, it is going to be even harder to leave Grinnell. There are so many memories I have over the last three years from both on and off the court, but most of all I remember the people that were alongside me. The people at Grinnell make it special, especially the women on the basketball team. The warmheartedness of campus and the sense of belonging is a few reasons why Grinnell is so unique. This past year, the basketball team was like a family; we always ate lunch and dinner together, as well as hung out with each other on weekends. You would think that we would get sick of each other but we didn't! In fact, since most of us are best friends, our closeness tends to carry out onto the court. In my opinion, the 2008-2009 basketball team was the best team I have ever been on. Although our record doesn't show that we were the best, we filled that void with other things. To name a couple, our team chemistry was amazing and each individual on the team worked hard everyday. Everyday it was a battle and that is what competing is all about. These are some of the reasons why I am looking forward to this next season, as well as a few more:
1. We didn't lose too many players so we will still be a close team
2. We have some amazing first years coming in both basketball wise and personality wise!
3. Our off season programs are definitely helping to prepare us for next season.
4. We are all hard workers so success will come to us as long as we work hard everyday and never give up
5. Coach now has a year under her belt so I know she is as fired up as I am to get back into season!
Until that time comes, enjoy summer and keep working hard at whatever it is you are doing!
