The Grinnell Athletic Community lost one of its Pioneers in the passing of long-time coach and athletic director John Pfitsch. John was a tremendous story-teller, a passionate coach and mentor, and a Pioneer icon.
In a memorial ceremony held at Herrick Chapel this morning, his athletes remembered his mantra of "always keep your knees bent", a phrase he used for life on and off the court and field.
George Drake (former Grinnell president) remembered John as the man that taught him to love the college.
I couldn't agree more.
John and his wife Emily would often come to our games, sitting high from the court in the press box area. John would always have a smile and a firm hand shake for me after our competitions, win or loss.
John was a special man and a special Pioneer. He inspires us to coach with our hearts and to lead a passionate life.
John was a Pioneer to the core, and for that we are tremendously grateful.
